Department of European Affairs attends National Day Reception of the Republic of Austria.

On 26 October 2026, H.E. Ms. Somrudee Poopornanake, Director-General of the Department of European Affairs, together with the Department’s executives and officials, attended the reception on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Austria, at the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok. On this occasion, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, attended the reception as the Guest of Honour and extended congratulations on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, highlighting the close and comprehensive relations between Thailand and Austria. H.E. Ms. Katharina Wieser, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Thailand, underscored the strong ties between the two countries in arts and culture, trade and investment, political exchanges and people-to-people relations.

Thailand and Austria have enjoyed longstanding relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1869. Today, bilateral cooperation spans a wide range of areas, particularly economic relations. Austria is Thailand’s 58th-largest trading partner globally and 14th-largest EU investor in Thailand, with over 100 Austrian companies operating in Thailand across various industries. At the same time, Thai businesses have expanded their investments in Austria, including in the electronics and hospitality sectors, reflecting the diverse and growing economic ties between the two countries.

Education and human resource development constitute another important pillar of bilateral relations. The Thai-Austrian Technical College in Sattahip, established with Austrian support in 1969, stands as a testament to the longstanding cooperation in vocational education, which has since expanded to skills development in areas such as railway technology and renewable energy. Furthermore, Thailand and Austria played key roles in initiating the ASEAN-European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) in 1994, which continues to promote cooperation in education, research, and academic exchanges between the two regions.
